Our New Home

We live in a great area of the city called Burnaby, which is just east of downtown Vancouver. We're right across the street from a French-language elementary school and have a nice view of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the north. The majority of the residents in our apartment building are Asian. We've heard that 25% of the population in Burnaby is Chinese and I think most people in our district are either East Asian, South Asian or Middle Eastern. Within a ten minute walk, we can find any kind of Asian cuisine you could possibly think of! We hear lots of different languages every time we step out. Vancouver is definitely the most diverse city either of us have ever lived in.

After we settled in, Russ and I went exploring on Thursday and found that we're about 45 minutes from the waterfront district, which is pretty close. Our place is about a fifteen minute walk from a Skytrain stop and about an hour from where we meet for work. Our reward is seeing a great view of the mountains along the way. This city is beautiful!

We're still waiting for our suitcases with a few "homey" things in it coming by UPS, but here are some pics for now...

Our living room. Our apartment came furnished (I think mostly by IKEA) and most everything you see was already here when we arrived. Look closely and you'll see the best part of our new place...our seafoam green phone. Just what we've always wanted :)

It definitely deserves a close-up. And it's so much brighter in person.

Our kitchen. Minus a dishwasher, but we haven't had one in three years, so we were prepared. We don't have a washer/dryer either, but there's one in the basement of our building.

Our bedroom. We have a simple, one bedroom place, so you've seen about everything except the best part for real...

The view! Both our living room and bedroom have great views of the mountains like this one.

This is the view from the street when you walk out of our building. Our apartment is on the second floor. The mountain to the left appears to be open for skiing because the top is lit up at night.

One quirky thing about our place that we've already found... Apparently if you take a shower, and don't have BOTH the fan on and the bathroom door closed, the fire alarm goes off. Not so cool when you're in the middle of a shower, but you live and learn :)
