Kurban Bayram

Kurban Bayram was this past week, starting November 15th. Kurban (meaning sacrifice) Bayram is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims to remember Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael (according to the Koran it was Ishmael, not Isaac) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. Families today celebrate with a sacrifice during this bayram and the meat is divided into three parts to be distributed to others. The family keeps one third of the portion, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor and needy.

In our city, there were designated places for sacrifices to take place. Some of our neighbors brought over lamb for us as a gift. The bayram holiday lasts for a week. Similar to the last bayram, people spend time visiting family and friends, bringing gifts of sweets and chocolate for family members and children. Schools were closed and most businesses were closed for the holiday as well.
