The Heat

August is HOT here. There's record heat everywhere, but for some reason, it just seems to feel hotter here. Maybe because many homes and most stores don't have air conditioning. We're on the top floor as well, so it seems to be hotter up here.

Here is Russ assembling yet another fan for our place. We had a couple that broke after two weeks, (including this one that he's putting together). We took ice cold showers at night and slept with two fans pointed right at us. I'm definitely thankful that we had power and fans, but I'm not sure how much it helped.

To buy A/C or not to buy A/C? That was the question. Would we be viewed as the wimpy Americans if we did? We wrestled with it...for a week. Once we found out that most of our neighbors had one and our friends had one, we did the inevitable. We bought an air conditioner (here it's called a "klima").

We put it in our salon (living room), since that's the room where we'll probably spend the most time. Shopping for household things like A/Cs here is, well, hilarious. Our language skills are noticeably absent these days. So picture us trying to: A) find an electrician in our town and B) talk to him about how to install an A/C when he doesn't speak English. Thankfully he was very gracious and came to our house so we could do more sign language and show him the A/C.

The result...success! Let there be AIR...in one room at least.
